Morro Rock is an extinct volcanic plug, one in a a chain of nine stretching for over 12 miles. Morro Rock is approximately 21 million years old and 576 ft high. Juan Cabrillo first sighted it in 1542. Originally surrounded by water the rock was quarried from 1889 to 1969 giving it its shape we see now.
